We like to think we are a different breed of theatre-makers. We often put ‘theatre’ in inverted commas when talking about our work because what is theatre anyway?
We make up new plays & stage them outside with actors & musicians but we also tour workshops and installations to festivals and green spaces. We run choirs and walking groups; story nights and self-guided smart-phone digital tours. That’s what we call theatre.
Our work encourages people to talk about ethics and society as well as environmentalism. We spend a lot of energy ensuring we reflect our priorities in the artworks we produce.

Since 2006, we’ve collaborated with a wide range of organisations and communities to find and tell the stories that really matter. With everyone from allotment plot holders to quantum physicists, we place a high priority on listening carefully & working together.
Our work can take us anywhere. Woodlands, cycle paths, old railway stations, empty shops. We defy convention and expectation, and play with curiosity and experimentation.

Sustainability
We feel justifiably proud of our pioneering low-carbon approach to making work. Since 2006, we have led from the front with innovative and resourceful ways to create and share what we do without hurting the planet. But it’s not enough.
The impending climate emergency was one of the reasons we started Kilter. Everything we do - from local community choirs to our touring work - is underpinned by our desire to make our interaction with the planet more sustainable.
We know we have made a real tangible difference in our own small way – choosing simple, actionable, enjoyable things that make an appreciable impact. The future is a complicated place. There is still so much we can all do to make it better.
Ethics
Everything we do revolves around 4 major themes: society, ethics, the environment and the future. It could be argued that the greatest of these is ethics. We really won’t do anything unless we think it’s right.
Ethics is also the cornerstone of all the collaborative work we do with universities. We facilitate creative conversations (that sometimes last for years) helping researchers work out their ethical responsibilities.
