One Small Step

A journey from climate anxiety to climate action

One Small Step is a programme of creative walks, funded by The National Lottery, designed to take participants on a journey from climate anxiety to climate action.

Each walk addresses a different climate related theme and a different audience - with different routes, special guests, and creative activities. You are welcome to attend any single event or stack up a collection. Whatever you decide, these walks will provide a great opportunity to get out and connect with the beautiful natural landscape around Bath.

Striding out, with our eyes on the horizon, will help us find fresh perspectives and new energy to tackle the toughest but most urgent subject we face.

This event series is funded by The National Lottery, and places on the walks are free (but registration is essential).

We have funding to support participation from those who would not usually be able to afford to be there. If you would like financial assistance to attend one of our walks, e.g. for public transport, please get in touch.

About the project

Kilter has been running community events in the great outdoors since 2006. In all that time our greatest priority has always been the environment. In fact, the main reason we started making plays was as a way to talk about climate change when the conversation was much less readily available than it is now.

One of the most effective (and ridiculously straightforward) strategies we have developed for keeping ourselves carbon neutral is by walking everywhere as much as possible. We encourage our actors to walk to rehearsals, our audiences to walk to performances, and we’ll often invite collaborators for a walking meeting. Walking is a great aid to creative thinking and problem solving.

We‘ve decided to programme a series of creative ‘walkshops’ over the next few months, open to the public for free thanks to funding from National Lottery Community Fund. The aim of the walks is to create space and time for people from all walks of life to come together and discuss a particular environmental issue in a creative way. We’ll take time to listen, and to share ideas that Kilter has developed over the last 17 years: enjoyable activities and attitudes that make grappling with the climate crisis less overwhelming and surprisingly achievable!

We are planning 12 different routes of varying distances and levels of difficulty. Each will offer different creative activities to address different aspects of the climate crisis. Many of the walks will also have special guest experts and opportunities to ‘netwalk’. Overall, our ambition is that every participant will be able to take One Small Step on their journey from climate anxiety to climate action.

Audience reactions to Kilter’s walks:

“Excellent says it all. Lovely hosts and fellow walkers. Interesting, Good to talk & to listen. It's inspired me to do more.”

- Participant, Home Sweet Home

“I just wanted to say what a great event Walking the Talk was! It was brilliantly led by Kilter Theatre (…) The conversations were engaging and I, amongst others, would welcome some more events like this”

- Participant, Walking the Talk

“A great way to spend an afternoon.”

- Participant, Home Sweet Home

“Kilter have worked with us from the start of our Walking Festivals (in 2017). They have created innovative and fun events, aimed at getting people walking and talking. The walkie-talkies have proven popular and successful and engaging new audiences and we’ll be seeing more of them in future years.”
